The collection consists of a brief biographical sketch of William Thomas Overby, a letter from Overby to his sister, Rosa Overby Christian, letters to Mrs. Christian and her daughter, Martha Catherine Christian (later Mrs. James Walter Mason) concerning the location of Overby's grave, photographs of Overby and the Front Royal Monument, and letters, clippings, etc., concerning the process of locating the Overby grave, marking it and erecting a marker on the square in Newnan, Georgia.

William Thomas Overby was a Confederate soldier from Newnan, Georgia who was hanged September 23, 1864 in Front Royal, Va. after refusing to reveal the hiding place of his unit. Overby and four others were captured September 23, 1864, along with a 17 year-old boy who had wanted to join the Confederate army.
